Urban Ambassadors, a Des Moines area nonprofit, helps you personalize your own path to sustainability and connects you to a community that promotes and grows local sustainability. On Wednesday, February 27th, the group will host its Seed Project Launch Party at the Des Moines Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (420 Watson Powell, Jr., Way, Suite 200, Des Moines). At the party, you’ll have the chance to learn about potential seed projects and to join one of the teams.
“Seed projects are an opportunity for the community to be hands on with sustainability. We are able to provide this opportunity, let the community take it forward, and watch the project actually take off,” said Urban Ambassadors Co-Founder and President Adam Hammes. “Sustainability is such a broad and diverse topic. We understand that it means different things to different people, and these projects are a way to understand how you can apply sustainability in Greater Des Moines.”
At the Seed Project Launch Party, the board will cover aspects that make a seed project successful, how Urban Ambassadors will support the project ideas, and the history of seed projects thus far. It also is a wonderful opportunity to meet others who are interested in making Greater Des Moines a greener community.
This is the fourth year that Urban Ambassadors has launched seed projects. Past projects have included the Scavo Urban School Garden, the greening of 80/35, the Hope for the Hungry event, Park(ing) Day, and Shoot Your Commute.
“This year the goal is to start two to three more projects. Through a Facebook and member survey, people expressed that they were interested in projects related to urban farming, car share programs, permeable pavers, and native landscaping,” said Hammes.

Crissanka Christadoss serves on the board of Urban Ambassadors as the Events Chair. She is currently Coordinator for the Iowa Chapter of the American Parkinson Disease Association, whose mission is to ease and find a cure for those impacted by Parkinson’s disease in communities across Iowa. Crissanka has a Master’s in Health Communication from Emerson College in Boston and a Bachelor’s in Biology from Purdue University.
