Residents will have a chance to practice yoga, play soccer, and even dance down a portion of University Avenue this Sunday as Des Moines hosts its first Open Streets event on Sunday, Sept. 29th from noon to 4 p.m. The event, entitled DSMove, is a Des Moines version of a national effort to promote neighborhoods, local businesses, physical activity, health, and a sustainable future. There will be a wide range of free activities for all ages.
University Avenue will be closed between 23rd and 41st streets. This well-traveled street will be converted to a soccer pitch, disc golf course, basketball court, skate park, construction zone, playground, yoga studio, dance floor, concert hall, classroom and extra-long block party.
Attractions include the world’s largest bike, chalk art, art works, recumbent bike test rides, hula hoop lessons, Isiserettes, drum circles, granny basketball, “Freedom from training wheels” lessons, and more. View a block by block activity list.
DSMove is a project brought to you by the Des Moines Parks and Recreation, Des Moines Bicycle Collective, Drake University Drake Neighborhood Association, and supportive partnerships with local businesses, churches, and nonprofit institutions.
This sounds amazing! I have shared this information with friends and family since it is supposed to be a nice day out this Sunday! Keep ’em coming!
Great, see you there!
